In the late summer of 2024, the number of attacks that Ansarullah (Houthi) forces attempted against ships in the waters off Yemen fell sharply, from 27 in August to just five in September. The monthly count did not rise above seven between then and the end of the year. This contrasts with the period between January and August, when the monthly number of attacks ranged from 23 to 49.
This raises the question of how big an impact was achieved by the strikes carried out by the United States and the United Kingdom against Houthi targets in 2024, which were codenamed Operation Poseidon Archer and intended to ‘disrupt and degrade’ the Houthis’ capabilities to attack ships.
Mission launchThe Houthis began attacking commercial shipping on 19 November 2023, and claimed their first attack on a US warship on 9 January 2024. The following day the UN Security Council passed Resolution 2722, condemning the maritime attacks and demanding their immediate cessation.
