Matthew McConaughey Bid for Texas Governor Taken 'Very Seriously' by Greg Abbott

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott isn't taking Matthew McConaughey's run for governor lightly. Abbot made an appearance on Fox News and spoke with Chris Wallace regarding McConaughey's bid for governor and his thoughts on the matter.

"It doesn't matter what the name is, I take everybody very seriously, and it shows," Abbott said. "I will tell you two things, and that is if you look at my polling numbers, they are very, very strong. In addition to that, I have $55 million in the bank already, and I'm a very aggressive fund-raiser. So, I will have the resources and the backing of a lot of people across the state of Texas to ensure that whoever decides to run against me, we will be able to win."

Abbott also spoke about other pressing concerns, more importantly, the power grid issue that's been plaguing Texas since February. The power grid failed during a winter storm in Texas where over 50 people lost their lives and some were without power for weeks.

"I must point out, Chris, one very important thing that most people do not know, and that is, what was the main cause of the power grid failure in the wintertime, and it's nothing what anybody knows," Abbott explained to the host. "The main cause of the power grid failure of the state of Texas actually was a failure by the power generators in Texas to file a simple document with ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas."

As for Matthew McConaughey, the Texas native has been making rounds throughout the media to declare his run to be the next governor of Texas. A recent poll from Quinnipiac University shows 41 percent of voters would like to see him run, while the other 47 percent said they'll pass.

In a recent interview with AARP, he stated he wants to help America "find common denominators" and "heal."

"We're coming out of a time of limbo and evolving, as people and as a nation. We've got to come together and have some sort of unity—I think everyone can agree we can use that," McConaughey said.

McConaughey, along with his wife, have raised $8 million through a virtual fundraiser coined "We're Texas" to help fellow Texans recover from the after-effects of the February winter storm.

The actor has appeared in hit movies such as The Wedding Dancer, How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days and Wolf Of Wallstreet. He also was crowned sexiest man alive in 2005 by People Magazine.
