ISRO’s Recon Satellites: The Machines Behind India’s Successful Surgical Strikes

The high-resolution imagery and intelligence that was required to conduct the successful surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were provided to the Indian Army by the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Cartosat series of satellites, namely Cartosat-2, 2A, 2B and 2C. They are often referred to as India’s ‘eye in the sky’.

"We've been providing images to the armed forces, the army in particular," a source from ISRO told The Times of India.

According to IANS, the earth observation satellites are managed by ISRO, but the use of satellite's payload or equipment dedicated for strategic use is decided by the defence forces.

With the capability of providing high-resolution images of up to 0.65m, the Cartosat 2A satellite proved to be the guiding eye for Indian soldiers behind enemy lines.

The Cartosat 2C was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota on 22 June this year. It was one of the 20 satellites that were put into orbit as part of a historic mission. The data provided for the surgical strikes to occur was reportedly the first time that Cartosat 2C was used to provide high-resolution images of certain areas.

ISRO is now set to launch a satellite to be used by the Indian Air Force. The Indian defence forces will soon have around six satellites for their use at any given point of time in the near future.

Telecom Operators Accuse Jio Of Violating Tariff Norms: Fact Or Sour Grapes?

30 Sep, 2016, 9:45 pm

Against the backdrop of Reliance Jio asking for additional intercommention points from incumbent operators, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Telenor told the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Friday that it was the new entrant that was violating the tariff norms.

"The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will look into the matter and revert as soon as possible," one of the company officials who attended the meeting said, based purportedly on what Chairman R S Sharma said during the 90-minute meet.

This is not the first time Jio has faced such obstacles in its way. Shortly after Mukesh Ambani announced that voice calls would be free for Jio customers, the Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) sent a letter to Nripendra Misra, the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary, complaining that this would lower their revenues.

If there is evidence of Jio’s violations, TRAI should certainly take proper action against it. But if it’s the incumbents crying sour grapes, then it is simply disappointing.

The incumbents have one noteworthy advantage that Jio is yet to have – a large customer base. The top three, namely Airtel, Vodafone and Idea, have nearly 650 million customers between them. This gives them a ready base, for which Jio will have to fight.

As our editorial director wrote, they should welcome Jio’s intrusive entry, which will force the weaker players to exit, enabling tariffs to rise after a while.
