We've been hearing variations of the same story for years: "Facebook is no longer cool", "people are leaving Facebook behind", "teenagers are over Facebook" etc.
And yet, the world's largest social network continues to grow. According to its latest earnings release, Facebook currently has 1.71 billion monthly active users. That is nearly one quarter of the world population and roughly 50 percent of all internet users across the globe.
And even the argument that people are using Facebook less frequently than they used to, doesn't hold up. In fact, the proportion of Facebook's users who log on every single day has risen from 55 percent in 2011 to 66 percent in the latest quarter. This probably has to do with Facebook's transition to become a mobile-first platform. Having a smartphone makes it a lot more convenient to check Facebook every once in a while. As of last quarter, nearly a billion of Facebook's users were active exclusively on mobile devices.
This chart shows how many Facebook users are active on the social network every single day.
