India can't allow volunteers to travel abroad to fight ISIS, Centre tells court

India fears volunteers will be radicalised

The Centre told the Delhi High Court that it cannot allow Indians to go abroad to fight against Islamic State as it could directly result in sectarian conflict within India. “Volunteers, if allowed to go into conflict zones, could get radicalised and on their return, could indulge in extremist activities in India,” said an affidavit filed by the home ministry. The affidavit came in response to the efforts of an organisation called the Anjuman-e-Haideri to mobilise Muslims to combat the threat of ISIS. But the ministry said that allowing Indians "to participate in a conflict in a foreign country is in absolute contravention of the law and stated policy of the country”.

Mamata announces declassification of 64 Netaji files


Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the declassification of 64 files in the possession of the state government. Of these files, nine are with Intelligence Branch of Bengal police and 55 files are with Special Branch of Kolkata Police. The documents relate to the surveillance on Netaji's house and communications sent by 14 agents to the colonial government.

Rahul was insecure in Amethi, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Former Congress leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who quit the party after falling out with Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi and joined BJP, has stated in his resignation letter to Sonia Gandhi that her son Rahul may have tried to pretend that he is a very strong leader but had actually felt insecure in his own constituency Amethi. A major part of Sarma's resignation letter deals with his differences with Gogoi and charges that the three-time chief minister with promoting despotic family-centric politics at the expense of the party.

Gujarat no.1, Bihar 21 in development: Jaitley

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday lashed out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying that the time for debating development was over as it had been proved that Gujarat was the No. 1 state while Bihar stood at 21. "The economy speaks through statistics and not through debate," Jaitley said.

Pakistan pounds Poonch for third day

Pakistani troops violated ceasefire for the third consecutive day on Thursday as they pounded forward posts and civilian areas along the Line of Control in Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir. "Pakistani troops resorted to heavy firing of automatic weapons and Rocket Projectile Grenades besides mortar bombs on forward posts along LoC in Balakote sector of Poonch district from 1820 hours this evening," PRO Defence, Jammu, SN Acharya said.
