ISIS, or the “Islamic State” as the group commonly refers to itself, has already made global headlines for its frequent beheadings, suicide bombings, and reportedly throwing gay people from rooftops to their deaths.
The group is known for not only committing these horrific acts, but also for gleefully filming it and then releasing the footage to the media.
But as shocking as all of those acts are, they won’t likely prepare you for one of their latest alleged actions — a so-called “training mission” — in which ISIS reportedly attached explosives to a baby and then used a remote detonator to blow it apart.
While the fine-print details are sketchy, the Daily Mail reports that Sadiq al-Husseini, head of the security committee in Diyala province, confirmed the action was an “ISIS training mission.”
“The booby-trapping of the baby was a training mission for ISIS to teach its elements the booby-trapping mechanisms,” al-Husseini said, adding that the baby’s father was arrested and executed for killing “several ISIS militants.”
“It is unclear what happened to the baby’s mother,” the Mail notes.
In a separate report from Iraqi News, al-Husseini called the mission a “punishment for [the baby’s] father’s attack on ISIS fighters” and noted that ISIS “does not care for the most basic human values.”
Readers of this news were understandably appalled by the depths of humanity described in al-Husseini’s report, but there is at least some possibility that the atrocity never happened, a fact Fark commenters were quick to point out, noting the questionable sources used in reporting the event — the Mail and Iraqi News.
“There’s no evidence besides that one Iraqi guy’s claim,” writes one commenter.
“It’s the Fail [Daily Mail], so I’m even doubting whether the Iraqi guy said it at all,” wrote another.
It is important to note that when ISIS commits a horrible act, they have a tendency to record it and make it available for public consumption.
To date, there are a few variables unknown, which make the story questionable. For starters, there has been no recorded evidence as with the beheadings. ISIS has also not taken credit for this in any of the reports. The sex of the baby was not even revealed in the reports, nor was the name of the baby’s father or mother.
The only thing that this report does have going for it is the fact that it sounds like something ISIS would do based on what they’ve already done in cases like that of James Foley.
But what do you think, readers? Are news outlets too quick to report things like this as fact? Do you think there is truth to the reports that ISIS blew up a baby? Sound off in the comments section.
