The Obama administration has been very busy dealing with nuclear negotiations with Iran, a war against the Islamic State, a new conflict in Yemen and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. Yet the understandable focus on these other crises has obscured China's efforts to speed up its militarization of the South China Sea.
Disputes over territory in the South China Sea have escalated as China expands the reach of its military to back its territorial interests and challenges decades of U.S. Navy dominance in the Pacific.
The recent hostilities between Israel and Hamas are a chance for the United States to think strategically. Or, better yet, rethink — specifically the Obama administration’s “pivot to the Pacific.”
